Localization: Bordering a corner of the Avenida del Puerto de La Habana is the  majestic  Armadores de Santander Hotel, reminding us with its decoration the beautiful maritime Spanish province of the same name.On the highest part of the building and decorating the facade, there is the coat of arms of Santander. In the wide entrance hall there are big lanterns resembling the ones used in old ships. This Hotel is made up by three buildings (differed by different colors), two of them located at numbers  356 and 358 of  San Pedro Street and the third one located at numbers  2 y 4 of Luz Street, being the last one the main  building of the hotel. The  buildings have different styles: the first one is ecclectic, the second one is neoclassic with a Roman pediment and Corinthian columns, and both were built at the end of the 19th century. In the enormous entrance door are engraved the letters J.C. that are the capital letters of the name and last name of the  builder and owner of the property, José Cabrero Mier.

History

By the middle of the 19th century  Ramón Herrera y Sancibrián came to live in Havana. He was born in the town of  Stecros, located in Santander. He was a shipowner and by a  Royal Decree dated on January 20, 1876, he was granted the title of Count of the Mortera. The Herreras lived in this property until the early 1890’s. Then they bought the building located at  San Pedro and Sol Streets,  that has been known as “La casa del Conde de la Mortera”(the House of the Count of the Mortera). The hotel owes its name due to the fact that in this building were the offices of important ship owners from the region of Santander just like the Count of the Mortera, who was the owner of a fleet that operated in the Antilles transporting goods and soldiers. The hotel has three buildings, two of them located at 356 and 358 San Pedro street  between Santa Clara and Luz And the third at 2 and 4 Luz Street, this last one being the hotel’s main entrance. The hotel was built by the end of the 19th century by José Cabrero y Mier, who was born in Santander.

On the highest part of the building’s facade there is a bas-relief of the coat of arms of the city of Santander and in the enormous entrance door are engraved the letters J.C. that are the capital letters of the name and last name of the builder and owner of the property José Cabrero.
Mr. José Cabrero y Mier passed away on February, 1903 and from that year up to 1909 the main room of the first floor of the property was occupied by the Centro Balear, a charity and mutual help association for Spanish residents in Cuba. The ground floor was leased for different commercial activities such as a confectioner store, a barbershop and stands for currency exchange, cigar, cigarettes and coffee selling. In the decade of 1930 there was a brothel occupying both floors and after that during the years 1940 and 1950, there was a business recorded as a hostel. The building is nowadays a hotel and it is a sample of architectonic and historic value settled by the centuries.
